Auston Matthews and head coach Jim Hiller have reached the point Toronto spent its entire offseason preparing for.
Matthews reportedly gave the Maple Leafs until the middle of July to show him where the franchise was headed before evaluating his long-term future.
That deadline has now arrived, putting the next decision squarely on Toronto’s captain after a sweeping series of roster and organizational changes.

Matthews never publicly demanded a trade. But the message behind his reported wait-and-see approach was clear: another quiet summer following another disappointing season wouldn’t be enough.
