13-year-old middle school football player and son of Kansas City Chiefs legend dies after going into cardiac arrest during practice

A 13-year-old middle school football player and the son of former Kansas City Chiefs standout Marcus Reed has died several days after suffering cardiac arrest during practice, leaving his family, teammates and the wider Kansas City football community devastated.

Ethan Reed, an eighth-grade student at Prairie Creek Middle School, had only recently begun preparations for the upcoming football season when the medical emergency occurred.

According to his older sister, Emily Reed, Ethan was completing a warm-up lap with teammates during an afternoon practice when he suddenly collapsed on the field.

“I was out shopping when I got the call,” Emily said.

“My mom called me, and I immediately rushed to the hospital. Ethan was always active.

He loved football, he was constantly running around, and he seemed completely healthy.

None of us could understand how something like this could happen.”

Coaches and school staff immediately rushed to Ethan’s side while emergency responders were called to the field.

CPR was performed as those nearby desperately attempted to keep the teenager alive until paramedics arrived.

Ethan was transported to a Kansas City-area hospital, where doctors continued treating him while his family remained at his bedside.

For several days, relatives, friends, teammates and members of the local football community hoped the young player would recover.

His family later received the devastating news that Ethan had died.
