“Daddy, I Love You”: The Family Moment Behind Patrick Mahomes’ Emotional Chiefs Return

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback had promised himself he would be ready after suffering tears to the ACL and LCL in his left knee late last season. But as the long rehabilitation finally reached its finish line, there was something waiting for him before the football even began.

His children.

Hours before Kansas City opened the 2026 season against the Denver Broncos, Brittany Mahomes shared a family video featuring messages for their father. The words were simple, but they captured the part of Mahomes’ recovery that statistics and medical updates could never fully explain.

“Daddy, I love you. I’m so happy you get to play football,” one of the children said.

The hardest part wasn’t football
Mahomes has spoken openly about the physical demands of his recovery.

The injury occurred on Dec. 14, 2025, against the Los Angeles Chargers, ending his season and immediately placing his availability for the following campaign under scrutiny. ESPN’s account of his rehabilitation details the extensive work that followed as Mahomes targeted a Week 1 return.

But when Mahomes discussed the early stages of rehabilitation during training camp, he revealed that the hardest part was not necessarily missing football.

It was missing the ordinary moments of fatherhood.

“Honestly, the toughest part was at the beginning, not being able to get up and chase my kids around,” Mahomes said.

That detail offered a different perspective on the injury.

For one of the NFL’s most recognizable quarterbacks, the immediate objective might have been to regain mobility, strength and the ability to throw from the pocket. At home, however, the goal was much simpler: being able to move freely with his children again.

Mahomes and Brittany are parents to Sterling, Bronze and Golden, and he has repeatedly described fatherhood as a major part of his life away from football.

Being unable to be as active with them became an unexpected source of frustration.

Then, as his rehabilitation progressed, those everyday moments became motivation.

“Once I was able to do that, it kinda motivated me to keep getting better and better,” Mahomes said.

That context made the children’s message before Week 1 especially meaningful.
