But Kelce ultimately chose to return for a 14th season.

Now, as the 2026 season begins, he has offered perhaps his most revealing explanation yet.

During an appearance with ESPN’s Chris Berman on Good Morning America, Kelce admitted that he simply isn’t ready to let football go. He explained that he still has the desire to compete and believes he can perform at a high level.

And that changes the tone of the retirement conversation completely.

This isn’t a player desperately hanging onto the past.

It’s a veteran who still feels there is something left to give.

Kelce’s message was remarkably straightforward.

He said he was still sitting there thinking that he didn’t want to let football go and wanted to keep playing “until the wheels fall off.”

Kelce doesn’t need another Super Bowl ring to validate his career. He doesn’t need another Pro Bowl appearance to prove his value. And he certainly doesn’t need another record to establish himself among the greatest tight ends in NFL history.
