KANSAS CITY — Travis Kelce stood up from the table barely thirty minutes ago and left a joint media session with Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid before the questions were finished. What froze the room was not the exit itself. It was the half-second before he turned for the door.
The setting was familiar: a dark backdrop stamped with the arrowhead, two NFL microphones, the veteran tight end in the red No. 87 jersey with the captain’s “C” on his chest. Reid, in the red pullover and Chiefs cap, had been doing most of the talking. Kelce had been leaning on the table, jaw set, eyes down. Reporters who have covered this building for years said the air felt wrong from the first answer.
Reid had opened by praising Kelce’s start to a 14th NFL season, then drifted, as he often does, into the subject nobody in the organization can bury: retirement.
“He’s still the standard in that room,” Reid said, one hand lifted as if he were diagramming a route. “But everybody keeps asking me how long. I keep telling them the same thing. Ask him. He’s the one who has to want it on Sundays.”
